Vienna (OTS) Spring is here and Easter is just around the corner: In addition to classics such as toys, sweets and chocolate, pets are increasingly becoming popular gifts. The Austrian Dog Association (ÖKV) warns urgently about this: “Dogs have no place in the Easter basket,” says board member Philipp Ita. After just a few weeks, many families have to admit that their offspring don’t really want to fit into everyday life. The result: After Easter, the animals – especially dogs – end up in the animal shelter and often become permanent guests. Worse still, some dogs are simply abandoned in nature. The ÖKV therefore appeals: Hands off animals as Easter gifts!

Well-considered purchase for many years

“Before buying a dog, the question must always be answered: Do I have time and resources for my four-legged friend for many years? Which breed is right for me? Who looks after and feeds the dog, who takes care of the training and upbringing, who plays with it – in short: Can the time that the dog needs be spent – over many years?”, says Philipp Ita, summarizing just some of the questions that should be asked at the beginning of the consideration for a pet. He advises to consult in detail and honestly with experts beforehand with experienced dog owners and only then decide on the purchase. “This is not only in the interest of the family, but also of the dogs,” says Ita.
