More than half of the registration fee goes to the authorities

Vienna (OTS) The mobility club welcomes the introduction of the digital registration certificate in Austria. ÖAMTC lawyer Matthias Wolf: “It is a relief for drivers and law enforcement that in the future all traffic control can be carried out using a QR code.” However, another, long-overdue reform is still open: every time a vehicle is registered, regardless of whether it is a change of residence or a new registration, over 200 euros are due. More than half of this – currently 119.80 euros – goes to the authorities fee. There is no actual compensation from the local authorities. For the ÖAMTC, abolishing fees would be a timely and logical measure.

In view of the high financial burden that drivers are currently faced with, the mobility club is calling for this “Körberlgeld” to be abolished as quickly as possible. Wolf: “It is particularly absurd that if you change your place of residence to another district, you have to pay the entire registration fee of over 200 euros again. So if you move more often for work reasons, you pay several times – which, for example, affects seasonal workers massively.” According to Wolf, changing the address can be done easily by comparing it with the central registration register: “Since all data in the registration system is centralized and digitized anyway, the mandatory deregistration and re-registration of a vehicle is antiquated. Abolishing this procedure would not only mean that Registration holders, but also the registration authorities are significantly relieved.”

Zwtl.: Club suggests alternative – delete the obligation to change license plates

In this context, the ÖAMTC also reminds us of alternative ideas: the obligation to change license plates if you change your place of residence to another district could be eliminated. “This would also eliminate the high fee,” says Matthias Wolf. “In any case, with a reform in the registration system, financial hurdles when changing residence could be abolished and the burden on people could be relieved in the long term, for example because an existing electronic toll vignette would continue to apply.”
