About 50 to 60 percent of the leather is collected during Eid al-Adha. Every year on Eid-ul-Azha, raw hides are sold in different parts of the country including the capital. This time was no exception.
On Monday (June 17), the sale of raw hides started in different areas of the capital including Aminbazar. Both buyers and sellers are seasonal traders in this market.
Talking to the seasonal leather traders, it is known that they are buying cow leather at 700 to 800 taka and goat skin at 10 taka per piece depending on the quality and size. They claim that the price is higher this time than last time. The sellers say that they are not getting the price as expected. This time the price is lower than last time. No one buys goat skin even for 10 taka.
On the surface, it can be seen that leather is coming from different parts of Dhaka and Savar by van-autorickshaws to the temporary leather market near Aminbazar Bridge. As soon as the leather car arrives, a group of people are attacking with knives. They are cutting the meat with skin and fat. In the meantime, the price is going on. There are more buyers than sellers. The price of medium and large cow hides is 600-800 taka. Small cow 400-500 taka. No one wants to buy goat skin.
Jewel Ahmed came to this market with 9 pieces of cow skin from Savar. Seasonal leather seller Jewel told Jago News that buyers are asking for syndicated leather prices. The traders here are not borrowing anything the size of leather. The price of each piece of leather is said to be 600-700 taka. I will not sell leather at this price.
This time, the government has fixed the price of salted cow leather at Tk 55-60 per square foot in Dhaka. Outside Dhaka, the price of salted cowhide has been fixed at Tk 50-55 per square foot. Those concerned say that last year, large-sized (30-32 square feet) cow hides were sold for Tk 900 and medium-sized (20-22 square feet) hides were sold for Tk 600 to Tk 700 during Eid al-Adha last year. Small cow skin was sold at 500 taka, goat skin at 20 to 30 taka. Buyers are saying that the price of leather is even lower this time.
Many excuses to buy leather at low prices
Buyers say the government has fixed the price of salted leather. But everyone is bringing skin without salt. Many skins are defective. Tannery owners don’t want to take them. Some are citing business losses.
Kamal Chand, the buyer of leather, said that the price of leather is Tk 700-800. You want to tell the price by looking at the leather. Large-medium sized skins cost the same. Having to buy leather. Defective leather is not taken in the tannery. If you buy it, it’s all a loss.
Selimuzzaman, another buyer, said that the reason for buying leather at a low price is that everyone’s business is bad at present. Trying to buy at a fair price. Trying to buy by satisfying the seller.
Sajib Mia, another customer, said most of the leather was defective. I don’t want to buy goat skin. Some are buying for 10-20 rupees.
The sellers are complaining of syndicate against leather buyers. Seller Jewel said, not everyone has come to sell leather yet. However, buyers here are united in asking prices. Everyone is talking in the same tone. The real image will be seen at night.
Farooq Ahmed brought 25 pieces of cow skin from Bailapur in Savar. He said, I bought leather from people for 700-800 rupees per piece. The selling price here is 700-800 taka. I see that the car rental money will also be lost. Out of 25 pieces, 5-6 pieces of small skin are kept separately. Their price may be 200-300 rupees. This time the price is lower than last time. They have actually syndicated, we are hostages to this syndicate. But there is nothing to do but sell the leather at a loss.
