In a recent presentation before the City Council, the government of the District of Bogotá has revealed its ambitious Development Plan ‘Bogotá Walk Safely’, outlining strategies for the next four years.

However, one of the most debated and controversial proposals within this plan is the introduction of a specific tax aimed at finance public lighting service in the Colombian capital.

According to the district government, this tax would be crucial to maintain, modernize and expand public lighting in Bogotá.

The proposal contemplates variable rates depending on the socioeconomic stratum, exempting the strata 1 and 2, while strata 3, 4, 5 and 6 they would pay rates of 5%, 6% and 7% respectively.

The tax base would be the value billed monthly for the public home electricity service in the Capital District.

However, the proposal has generated intense debate, especially with regard to the economic impact it would have on industry and commerce, which would face an additional increase in the 10% on what they currently pay.

This increase could have significant repercussions on these sectors.
