The Venezuelan Adjustment Bill: A Path to Permanent Residence in the United States
Caracas.- Four congressmen have reintroduced the draft Venezuelan adjustment law to provide a pathway for Venezuelans in the United States to obtain permanent residence. If the project is approved, certain conditions must be met in order to apply.
During a Twitter Space hosted by the executive director of the organization leading the project, My Voice Counts, Mildred Rodriguez, explained the three conditions that Venezuelan migrants must meet to be eligible for residency if the project is approved:
Conditions for Eligibility
Demonstrate a continuous stay on US soil for one year and one day. The person must have entered before December 31, 2021.
Have no more than two felony court cases on record.
Not be accused of committing a felony crime or participating in any persecution or harassment towards an individual.
Rodriguez emphasizes that obtaining permanent residence brings numerous benefits for migrants. It not only allows them to travel outside the United States but also enables them to practice their profession or be recipients of scholarships.
“Permanent residence grants freedom within the United States. People without it are essentially imprisoned within the country… Some individuals have been waiting for an appointment for over 10 years to obtain asylum and then apply for residence. Additionally, after obtaining residency, one can pursue citizenship,” she said.
Seeking 500,000 Signatures
The director of My Voice Counts, based on data collected with the help of other organizations, estimates that there were over 400,000 Venezuelans in the United States by 2021. Therefore, the goal is to collect 500,000 signatures to support the Venezuelan adjustment law.
“We aim to gather 500,000 signatures because we want to benefit more than 400,000 Venezuelans once this project is approved. We want to give more than what we ask for,” explains Rodriguez.
Mildred Rodriguez emphasizes that to sign the petition, individuals must be over 18 years of age and reside within the United States. “The signatures are what allow us to strongly support a bill in which we have the backing of a community.”
