SYDNEY – MV Noongah, boat big stuff Australia carrying 26 people, sank and mysteriously disappeared off the coast of New South Wales in 1969. After 55 years, the wreck was finally found.

According to reports BBC, Friday (26/7/2024), the large cargo ship was transporting steel off the coast of New South Wales when it mysteriously sank, killing 21 of the 26 crew members.

The tragedy sparked one of the largest maritime searches in Australian history, but the remains of the 20 victims were never found.

A group of Australian scientists on Thursday announced the discovery of the wreck of the MV Noongah.

The location of the wreck was confirmed by the Australian science agency; CSIRO, using high-resolution seabed mapping and video footage.

According to a press release, one of the agency’s research vessels investigated the wreck in June and confirmed that, after nearly 55 years, the ship was largely intact and lying upright on the seabed, about 550 feet below the surface.

The diving team then explored the wreck closely to confirm its identity.

The Sydney Project—which discovered and documented the lost shipwreck—is now planning dives to gather additional information from the site, in the hope of uncovering what caused the ship to sink.

“This tragedy is still very much in the minds of many people in the community,” said CSIRO’s Matt Kimber.
