The National Unity Government opened an investigation after mysterious ground cracks appeared in the municipality of Al-Subaia, south of the capital, Tripoli. Citizens reported them and demanded to know their causes.
The Ministry of Environment said, in a statement on Monday, that a team affiliated with it visited the region and closely examined the phenomenon of ground cracks, adding that a report will be prepared and referred to the competent authorities in the Ministry to find out their causes and the extent of their danger.
For its part, the Ministry of Local Government announced that a team affiliated with it moved directly to the area of the cracks to explore and study the phenomenon occurring, and to identify all the sites that witnessed cracks or subsidence, collect the necessary information to understand the geological nature of the area, and investigate the history of the phenomenon from the people.
Pictures and video clips circulating on social media, filmed from inside one of the farms in the Al-Subaia area, showed deep and long cracks in the ground, in an unprecedented phenomenon that occurred suddenly, which raised the astonishment and concern of residents, and raised broad questions about the causes of these deep cracks.
The Municipal Council of Al-Subay’a said that these ground cracks appeared in several locations and reached a depth of 4 meters and a width of 3 meters at different distances, indicating that it formed a team to identify this phenomenon and find out its causes by studying the sites and taking samples from them.
