The first international boxing tournament of the new year. So there was a crowd of visitors at Kamal Ataturk Park in Banani. International professional boxing competition ‘Path to Glory – Hustle in Dhaka Square’ was a great event in the middle of the park on Saturday night.
The biggest attraction was the fight between Suro Krishna Chakma of Bangladesh and Sandeep Kumar of India. Suro defeated India’s strongest boxer in the lightweight category of 8 rounds. The Bangladeshi boxer wrapped the national flag after the fight. Bangladesh Pro Boxing Foundation President Adnan Harun congratulated him on the stage.
This boxer from Rangamati is excited to be champion in Saturday’s fight. I practiced a lot for the competition. But it was not known that the opponent boxer would be so tough, would bring so much preparation. I thought Ahamri was a boxer. But he is a tough opponent.’
It is very difficult to fight in a short time in a professional tournament, said the 29-year-old boxer, ‘It is not an easy task to fight 15 days before and get back into the ring. At least 2-3 months rest is required in professional boxing. But I didn’t get that chance. I entered this fight only for a good chance.’
Beating an Indian opponent in any game is a big deal. In the boxing ring, Suro is happy with the victory, ‘It is a joy to beat any boxer, not just an Indian. It is always an honor for me to represent my country.’
Due to winning the 8th round, Suro will be able to fight for the 10th round, ‘I can fight for the title this time. Next up is the WBC (World Boxing Council) Championship. Boxers like Muhammad Ali, Mike Tyson have played in the fight. Now I can play in that competition. It will be history not only for me but for whole Bangladesh. A huge achievement is waiting for Bangladesh.
Earlier, Bangladesh’s Al Amin and Moksedul Rana played in the welterweight category. Al Amin easily won this category. However, Risatul Mahmud Sajin of Bangladesh drew with Dyloniel McDillon of Malaysia in the featherweight category in the 6th round.
