New Delhi. Australia on Wednesday announced its 15-member squad for the 2024 T20 World Cup. Mitchell Marsh became the captain of the team. Senior pitcher Steve Smith, junior Jack Fraser-McGuirk, senior pitcher Jason Behrendorff and all-rounder Jason Behrendorff were all missing from the team.
Ashton Agar has returned to Australia’s 2021 T20 World Cup-winning team. The left-arm spinner has not played a single T20 International match since the 2022 T20 World Cup. Additionally, all-rounders Marcus Stoinis and Cameron Green are also eligible but their performances in the IPL have been inconsistent.
Chairman of the selection committee George Bailey said that he is confident that Australia has a balanced team and expects them to perform better in the ninth T20 World Cup. The ICC quoted Bailey as saying, “This is an experienced team with World Cup experience. Given the unique nature of the West Indies pitch and the playing conditions of the opponents, the committee believes that I am confident that we have a great team.
Bailey said: “We are delighted to have Ashton Agar return and are confident he will play an important role in the next tournament. Marcus Stinnis, Glenn Maxwell, Cameron Green and Mitchell…Marsh will strengthen the bowling attack. There are many options for batting, including testing players depending on the venue and opponent.
Australia is in Group B in the 2024 T20 World Cup. They will start their match against Oman in Barbados on June 5. Group B includes Australia, Oman, England, Namibia and Scotland.
