AREQUIPA, Peru – The Matanzas Provincial Meteorological Center will implement a specialized early warning service for severe local storms, which would be aimed, essentially, at independent agricultural producers.

A report from the Cuban News Agency (ACN), there is a growing interest on the Island in real-time information on the state of the weather to adapt to climate change and avoid damage, “especially by the non-state sector.”

Niliam Fernández Rosado, deputy technical director of the aforementioned Meteorological Center, explained that the institution participates in several territorial research projects aimed at solving problems in the region, based on joint work with health, heritage, telecommunications, and agriculture authorities.

“It is our goal to promote greater awareness about meteorological services, essential for human activity and mitigate the effects of climate change; In this sense, the agricultural system should make greater use of the information we provide,” the directive explained.

Likewise, he recalled that the specialized services of the Center in Matanzas are currently aimed at specific areas and activities, such as popular councils, livestock areas, tourist facilities, and scenarios where integrated coastal management is applied, and contribute to decision making.

Fernández Rosado highlighted that four of the seven existing stations in Matanzas are equipped to develop agrometeorological activity in the municipalities of Perico, Jovellanos, Colón and Jagüey Grande, of interest to associate the behavior of the climate with different crops such as beans.

“Thanks to portable technology, the Center monitors the different polluting gases in this city, which is expressed in an attractive service today for the company Rayonitro, located in the industrial zone and dedicated to the production of fertilizers,” adds the report.

In the comments section of the publication, a user identified as Margarita expressed her discontent with the way the new service will be implemented.

“I do not understand that the action is directed solely and exclusively for independent agricultural producers (…) the expression that should be used is state or non-state agricultural producer. I think the intention is valid for any economic actor. Let’s not start establishing more differences. “It would be the last thing that could exist in our country,” wrote the Internet user.
