Jonathan Luna Receives 12-Year Sentence for Child Abuse in New York
The mother of an unidentified child who was sexually abused for six years expressed her heartbreak in court yesterday, referring to the perpetrator as a “pedophile” who was once considered part of the family. The emotional statement was made during the ruling at the Manhattan Supreme Court, as reported by the New York Post.
“Calling you a wolf in sheep’s clothing is kind of what it feels like, but that sounds too poetic,” the tearful mother said. “What you really are is a direct predator, a pedophile.”
Luna, who sexually abused the child from 2nd grade until 6th grade, was finally reported to the authorities by the victim’s parents. Prosecutors revealed that the abuse occurred on a regular basis during this period.
The now-teenage boy continues to suffer from nightmares and psychological trauma caused by years of abuse. According to his mother, he is unable to enjoy typical childhood experiences and remains haunted by the ordeal.
During his 10-minute speech, Luna, who also worked as a Boy Scout leader and camp counselor, did not once make eye contact with the victim’s mother. As part of his sentence, he will be required to register as a sex offender.
Luna held various positions involving minors, including counseling at the Boy Scott Keowa Summer Camp in Sullivan County in 2015, serving as a counselor for the McBurney YMCA after-school program at PS 41 in Greenwich Village from 2013 to 2016, working as a camp counselor in Pennsylvania from 2016 to 2017, and briefly serving as an after-school counselor at PS 340 in Chelsea in 2022.
The Manhattan district attorney’s office urges parents who suspect their children may have had contact with Luna to contact their child abuse unit at 212-335-4308.
