The announced major repair works on the R2 will start in the Antwerp port area on Friday evening at 8 p.m. Work will take place over ten weekends in May, June and July. The highway will be completely interrupted where construction work is taking place, and traffic on or to the R2 will be locally diverted.

The works will start on Friday evening in a first zone, on the R2 towards Ghent between the Waaslandhaven-Zuid entrance ramp and the connection with the E34. The connection with the E34 is therefore closed. Traffic from the Waaslandhaven area to the E34 towards Ghent will be diverted via the Hazopweg and Schoorhavenweg to the Vrasene exit. If you have to go to Antwerp, go via Steenlandlaan and Keetberglaan to the Waaslandhaven-Oost entrance ramp.

The works are divided into different phases. The site keeps moving, and the nuisance will therefore always be located in a different zone. Work is always carried out from 8 pm on Friday evening until 4.30 am on Monday morning, and additionally on Whit Monday. The Roads and Traffic Agency (AWV) hopes to have everything ready by the start of the construction holiday in July.

According to AWV, the R2 is in poor condition in several places due to the heavy truck traffic that the highway has to endure. Asphalt paving works are therefore necessary, but to make this as sustainable as possible, the foundation of the road surface will also be tackled. A total of 15 kilometers of lanes will be renovated, with a cost of 6.3 million euros.

Those who want to avoid the nuisance completely can opt for the Antwerp ring road (R1) and the Kennedy tunnel to cross the Scheldt.
