Many times suicide is not easy to prevent. According to research there is a large majority of people who wish to end their lives. However, sights and structures seem to be among the first choices that constitute a macabre destination.

In a macabre way, there are some famous locations, which have a reputation for attracting large numbers of people who choose them for the long-suffering journey,

The London Underground is perhaps the most famous public transit system in the world. The famous ‘The Tube’, as it is commonly known, began operating in the 19th century. It covers an impressively vast distance of 270 stations with 11 lines and its tracks are over 402 km long.

Unfortunately, however, it is also a popular destination for those who choose to end their lives. With the subway easily accessible from almost everywhere, its fast, heavy trains have become a popular means of transport for desperate city dwellers. Dozens of people make fatal jumps from the docks on a weekly basis.

In fact, the most popular bus stop is King’s Cross St. Pancras’, while the Northern Line takes the gruesome prize for the most ‘dives’ (145 deaths in 2001 and 2011).

The happy thing, as far as this can be said, is that the subway is amazingly ineffective (only 40% of those who attempt suicide die), and the survivors are charged with a series of misdemeanors such as “obstructing the flow of trains with intent” for example.

Gustave Eiffel’s 324-meter masterpiece is one of the most recognizable landmarks in the world and a symbol for both Paris and France as a whole. But not all the attention it receives is desirable. The “Iron Lady” unfortunately has high popularity rates among manuals everywhere. So much so, in fact, that it’s said to be the third most popular means of suicide nationwide.

Despite the open type design, it is actually quite difficult to jump thanks to the railings and various safety measures. However, many determined people manage to achieve it. Several even attempt to climb since the tower is closed to the public. Tower managers are wise to install safety nets and other secret security measures. In fact, they refuse to give statistics on the number of those who have gone on the awarded journey: “There are always too many”, they simply state to the media.

Imagine a quiet, idyllic neighborhood of preserved buildings, Nusle in Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic. It is a picturesque “collection” of small houses and old apartment buildings, located neatly in a small valley. However, this particular paradise has a huge dark secret: The Nusle Bridge, a huge concrete structure that spans the whole neighborhood, about 43 meters long. The main highway of the country “runs” through the bridge, and hosts the local metro line.

The real problem is that many use it to meet death.

The ominous bridge is a notorious suicide spot, to the point where locals have nicknamed it the ‘suicide bridge’. About 300 people have jumped from there since it was built 40 years ago. City officials have added a chain-link fence and other additional security measures, but all have done little to diminish the bridge’s eerie reputation.

When we think of people rushing to meet their doom at Niagara Falls, we usually think of old movies and wacky characters. However, reality does not leave much room for laughter. Every year about 40 people on average jump to their deaths in Niagara’s turbulent waters, with about 5,000 bodies recovered from 1850 to 2011.

The area is such that it is almost impossible to secure completely, thanks to the huge number of possible points for fatal jumps. The only people who benefit from the tragedies, it is said, are the captains and crews of the ‘Maid of the Mist’. The boatmen are supposed to have quite a lucrative business in retrieving the lifeless bodies.

The iconic Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco is a West Coast landmark, rivaling the famous Hollywood sign. As a huge structure that offers pedestrians a magnificent view and with free access to the 75-meter-high pier, the bridge is a particularly attractive place for suicides.

The Golden Gate holds the sad record of being the second most common place for suicides in the world. According to an official count there are about 1,200 people (number recorded in 2005), but authorities claim that the real number may be much higher.

The authorities have provided and there is a special patrol, Highway Patrol, who have prevented a large percentage of would-be suicide bombers, in the order of 80-90%. In addition, a safety net is under construction, but the lack of funding (it can cost up to 50 million dollars) has so far delayed the project.

Mount Mihara is a famous sight that dominates the island of Izu Oshima. It is the place where the government imprisoned Godzilla in the movie ‘The Return of Godzilla’, and it played a major role in the original version of the movie ‘Ring’.

However, it is also a popular destination for suicides. Mount Mihara also happens to be an active volcano, with several vents. This fact unfortunately contributed positively to a 21-year-old student, Kiyoko Matsumoti who jumped in 1933 into the depths of the mountain and immediately found herself in the hell of lava up to (1,200 ° C).

This tragic event was the beginning of a macabre fashion among the Japanese. For nearly a decade, jumping into the hot lava rivers of Mount Mihara became the most popular way to commit suicide. Thousands of people followed Kiyoko’s example, with the result that in 1933 alone 944 people met a gruesome death.

Authorities have since cordoned off the vantage point where myriads of desperadoes decide to do the somersault. This is supposed to deter those who decide it, although the authorities will never be 100% sure.
