President of Kazakhstan Tokayev, receiving the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cyprus in Astana, thanked him for the intention to open an embassy in Kazakhstan, noting that it will help deepen the Kazakh-Cypriot relationship. A few days ago, the Foreign Minister of Cyprus was in Armenia and during his visit it was announced that official Nicosia decided to open an embassy in Yerevan as well.

At first glance, the intention to open embassies in Armenia and Kazakhstan may have only a technical connection, but in the current geopolitical realities and regime of international relations, such issues will be limited to only technical ones, especially since they are related to geopolitically sensitive points: the Caucasus and Central Asia. Of course, Cyprus itself is a point on the geopolitical map, a very modest actor, and it seems that it will hardly be involved in the big geopolitical game even with that modesty. But, there is a fact, and as I mentioned, that fact is not at all technical, but political, because despite its scale modesty, Cyprus itself is a rather multi-layered political phenomenon in the sense of external relations or connections.

Especially, if we notice that Cyprus is one of the world’s offshore banks, which keep not only money, but also their mysterious connections with big politics. From this point of view, for example, on one hand, Nicosia stands out for its strong political support to Yerevan regarding the challenges in Armenia’s relations with Turkey and Azerbaijan, and on the other hand, it also plans to increase its political presence in the key country of Central Asia, which is also a member of the Organization of Turkic Speaking States. An ally of Azerbaijan and Turkey, and even one of the centers of that organization, if we take into account that the city of Turkestan in Kazakhstan was declared the cultural center of the Organization of Turkic Speaking States.

As it is known, Armenia relies not only on the bilateral, but also on the three-way format of Greece-Armenia-Cyprus in terms of relations with Cyprus. At the same time, if we take into account the fact that Cyprus, a member of the European Union, has a rather close relationship with Britain in terms of military and politics, and at the same time has the Northern Cyprus conflict with Turkey, it is quite clearly outlined that a “Cypriot line” is being opened in the great geopolitical game from the Caucasus to Central Asia. “, with many shareholders, and uncertainty of dividends at the same time. By the way, quite recently not only the foreign minister of Cyprus, but also of Kazakhstan was in Armenia, who arrived in Yerevan a few days after the visit of the President of Kazakhstan to Baku.
