To compile the list, TIME solicited nominations from all sectors and surveyed its global network of staff and correspondents, as well as outside experts. TIME editors then scored each company on key factors such as influence, innovation, ambition and success. The ethanol-to-sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) technology developed by LanzaJet has the potential to enable the aviation industry to achieve its net-zero goals by 2050. The company now operates in more than 25 countries and on five continents and opened the world’s first ethanol-to-SAF plant in Soperton, Georgia, USA, in January.
Recently announced investors include Microsoft’s Climate Innovation Fund, Southwest Airlines and global airport operator Groupe ADP. This broadens LanzaJet’s investor base across the value chain and builds on existing investments from British Airways, LanzaTech, Mitsui & Co., Shell and Suncor Energy, as well as funding from Breakthrough Energy, the US Department of Energy and the UK Department of Transport. Both LanzaTech and Microsoft have previously been named to the TIME100 list of most influential companies.
LanzaJet is also listed on Fortune’s 2024 Most Innovative Companies list, ranking 8th in Culture and 22nd in Products. LanzaJet CEO Jimmy Samartzis is also a 2024 Midwest Finalist for Ernst & Young’s Entrepreneur of the Year.
