KRC Genk are in big trouble with Sobol’s transfer

RC Strasbourg urgently wants to get rid of Eduard Sobol while Oleg Iachtchouk and Sergiy Serebrennikov are trying to find a new club for the Ukrainian left-back. He has been offered by KVC Westerlo and AA Gent, but he seems to be on his way to KRC Genk.

Sobol left Club Brugge exactly one year ago, where he played solidly, but certainly not impressively, for three and a half years. Several analysts, observers, media and fans have repeatedly expressed their doubts about his sporting contribution and his added value.

He was not considered a player who could take Club Brugge to the next level. Despite his professionalism, work ethic and team spirit, Sobol has failed to reach the sporting level of European football and the Belgian top level, the level to which Genk aspires.

Dealing with Eduard Sobol: Westerlo, AA Gent and KRC Genk

Oleg Iachtchouk and Sergiy Serebrennikov are actively exploring the Belgian market to find a new club for their client Eduard Sobol (28), made redundant at RC Strasbourg.

The Ukrainian left-back was offered to KVC Westerlo, where Rik De Mil still knows him from their time together at Club Brugge. Sobol, however, earns 700 thousand euros a year at Strasbourg, which does not seem financially feasible for KVC Westerlo.

Iachtchouk and Serebrennikov have also contacted AA Gent, who are looking for a replacement in view of the possible departure of Malick Fofana to Olympique Lyon. KRC Genk have also been contacted by the Ukrainian broker couple and the club appears to be the biggest contender to lure Sobol.

Genk are evaluating the possibility of strengthening their defense given the imminent departure of Gerardo Arteaga for Monterrey and Joris Kayembe’s participation in the Africa Cup of Nations with the Congo national team. Sobol is considered a left back suitable to strengthen the team.

Strasbourg would rather lose Sobol than gain him

KRC Genk is interested in renting Eduard Sobol for the rest of the season, with an option to buy, and RC Strasbourg is certainly open to this construction.

The French club is looking to offload Sobol, along with other surplus players such as Sanjin Prcic, Jean-Eudes Aholou and Maxime Bastian, during the winter transfer window.

Sobol has barely featured for Strasbourg and has only played 22 minutes in Ligue 1 this season. Since his arrival in January last year for 2.5 million euros, he has had no impact on the team.

Thomas Delaine is RCS’s first choice, and even when he was injured, right-back Marvin Senaya was preferred to Sobol. Furthermore, the club plans to sign an additional left-back in January, with more quality than the Ukrainian.

BlueCo, Strasbourg’s new American owners, have a far-sighted transfer policy and have set an age limit of 23 for signing a new left-back.

KRC Genk gets a “secret” weapon with Sobol

Thus Eduard Sobol suddenly finds himself facing a quick return to the Jupiler Pro League. Exactly one year ago he left Club Brugge for RC Strasbourg, and it looks like the 28-year-old will now return to the Belgian league.

KRC Genk obviously know Sobol’s qualities very well, so they won’t need a long adaptation period, other than to master Wouter Vrancken’s tactical principles.

Genk know what to expect from Sobol and will not have any big surprises. Sobol has always fit in well with the group and his professional attitude has always been appreciated at Club Brugge.

He has an impressive long shot, perhaps the Ukrainian’s most important offensive weapon.

Against KV Mechelen he beat Gaetan Coucke with an impressive free kick. He scored a wonderful volley from outside the box on the Union SG pitch. Sobol also managed a nice long-range shot against KV Kortrijk. “It can no longer be a coincidence,” coach Philippe Clement said of Sobol’s wonder goals.

Eduard Sobol has reached a level too low for Club Brugge

The Ukrainian full-back performed well in his three and a half seasons at Club Brugge, but every year it was found several times that Eduard Sobol did not fully meet the high sporting requirements of the West Flemish team.

Several analysts and observers, as well as Club Brugge fans, have repeatedly expressed their reservations about Sobol’s added value. Sobol’s rather mediocre performance was also a cause for discussion in the Belgian newspapers of the time.

“He can be happy playing for Club Brugge.”, “He is not the player who will take the blue-blacks to a higher level.” “The coach, management and teammates are aware of Sobol’s limitation,” Sobol newspapers have written in recent years.

Sobol wasn’t exactly a contributing player to the Bruges team, especially because he couldn’t contribute enough in attack. In this respect, for example, the gap between Clinton Mata and Sobol was very wide.

In the Belgian competition he didn’t have any major difficulties or level problems, but Jan Breydel still tried to improve. For example, before every season in the Champions League, the question was whether Sobol could hold his own at such a high level.

While Sobol has always been extremely professional, hard-working and a team player, he fell a little short on a sporting level.
