Days before the beginning of the 2024 school year, deputies from Unión por la Patria (UP), led by Victoria Tolosa Paz y Pablo Toredo, presented a bill to increase the amount of the Progresar Scholarships, monthly aid to students, and to represent 25% of the Total Basic Basket announced monthly by the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (Indec). Currently the sum is $20,000 and is received by young people between 16 and 25 years old. The initiative also seeks to increase it quarterly.

The project refers to the objective of the program implemented in 2014, during the government of Cristina Kirchner, to provide financing to low-income students from 16 to 24 years old so that they can finish primary or secondary school, complete a training cycle professional or study a tertiary or university career.

It is also highlighted that the amount of the scholarship has not been corrected since July 2023, which is why they demand that the updates be established by law, since as they highlight the current one “was liquefied by this year’s exorbitant inflation.” The project also establishes that the budget item from the national treasury intended to finance scholarships cannot be directed to different expenses.

If the value of the Basic Basket of February 2024 is taken, the Progresar Scholarship would be $149,205.80.

Inflation does not stop growing and #ProgresarScholarships are liquidated a few days before the start of a new school year. This program must be updated by Law.

“We want to guarantee equality in the right to access, permanence and completion of education for vulnerable families in Argentina who are victims of a context of brutal adjustment and inflation. That is why, together with more than 40 UP legislators, we presented this project to update by law and quarterly the amounts of the scholarships that the national government has decided not to update,” said national representative Victoria Tolosa Paz in a press release.

And he added: “We need to sustain and have an immediate update on the Progresar Scholarships, which with political decision in our government grew from 570 thousand in 2019 to 1,800,000 in 2023, because we believe that children in school or university are the best “We can provide for our country and they cannot be the ones who pay for the adjustment.”

Among the foundations of the project, which has the support and signature of 44 deputies of the space, it is mentioned that “it is urgent to attend to and guarantee the dignity of education for those who do not have their own resources for access, updating mobility by law. of said coverage in this inflationary context.”

According to the initiative, the opening of access to education, permanence and graduation would be guaranteed to groups in prioritized conditions of multidimensional vulnerability: without age limit for trans people, belonging to indigenous communities and/or native peoples, with disabilities or refugees . In addition, the initiative seeks to extend the age of people with children under 18 years of age belonging to single-parent households up to 35 years.

The bill has the support of national deputies Hilda Aguirre, Eugenia Alianello, Ernesto Ali, Walberto Allende, Jorge Neri Araujo Hernandez, Daniel Arroyo, Martin Aveiro, Luis Basterra, Tanya Bertoldi, Carlos Castagneto, Carlos Cisneros, Santiago Cafiero, Sergio Casas , Jorge Chica, Maria Luisa Chomniak, Ramiro Fernandez Patri, Andrea Freites, Daniel Gollan, Gustavo Gonzalez, Ricardo Herrera, Ana Maria Ianni, Aldo Leiva, Monica Litza, Mario Manrique, Varinia Liz Marin, Roberto Mirabella, Roxana Monzon, Micaela Moran, Maria Graciela Parola, Liliana Papponet, Gabriela Pedrali, Juan Manuel Pedrini, Julio Pereyra, Ariel Rauschenberger, Jorge Romero, Nancy Sand, Martin Soria, Eduardo Toniolli, Eduardo Valdes, Pablo Yedlin, Carolina Yutrovic and Natalia Zabala Chacur.
