AMMAN – The citizens Jordan vented their anger after the kingdom’s military helped bring down an incoming Iranian drone and missile Israel on Saturday night or early Sunday morning.
Anger broke out as protests against Israel’s war on Gaza continued in the Jordanian capital, Amman.
The Jordanian Air Force and the United States military shot down Iranian drones and missiles headed for Israel early Sunday morning, preventing them from reaching Israeli territory. The remains of Iranian cruise missiles fell across the country, with one mostly intact fragment landing in a residential area in Amman.
Iran’s attack on Sunday was in retaliation for Israel’s April 1 attack on its consulate in Damascus, which killed several top Iranian military officials. Most of Iran’s missiles were shot down, but some struck military bases in southern Israel.
After launching the missiles, Iranian officials said they considered the issue “resolved” and urged Israel not to escalate further.
Israel has not announced any plans to respond to the Iranian attack, but Israel’s war cabinet once again convened on Monday morning.
Jordan’s role in dropping the Iranian projectile sparked anger among Jordanians, most of whom oppose Israel’s war on Gaza, which has killed more than 33,000 Palestinians since October 7.
Many Jordanians took to social media to express their anger.
“King Abdullah II protects Israel from Iranian drones, that’s all fine. But he can’t protect the West Bank [Palestina],” said Walid al-Jama’iye, a Jordanian user of X on Monday.
