Kennedy (19) lost her leg in a car crash: “I ended up on an electricity cable that pinched my artery”

It’s an unlikely story. The crash dates from two years ago, but now the woman, who has not lost her sense of humor despite all the misery, is testifying about it for the first time in the local media. To warn others, she says.

She now has a prosthesis with which she can do her job well. But the scars of the injuries and the 21 operations that followed are still clearly visible. And they will remain so. But she is not ashamed of it. “I was lucky,” she says.

Kennedy Littledike crashed on May 22, 2021. Her relationship had just ended and she was going through a rough patch. Suddenly it went black before her eyes, a few moments later her car crashed into a pole at high speed. Two friends with whom she had gone to watch the sunset were in the car and were also seriously injured. (Read more below the post)

“The car started to spin. The blow was enormous. We weren’t wearing seat belts. I was catapulted out of the car and literally flew through the air. To ultimately end up nine meters above the ground (!) on an electricity cable.” She stayed there for an hour. Because it took that long before she was found and before the emergency services could help her. Because the power had to be turned off first because the risk of electrocution was too great. And all the while she remained conscious. “Otherwise I might have fallen down,” she says.

Arm ripped off

“As I was being thrown, my arm was literally torn off. It was still attached with skins. But my thigh was also in serious condition. Normally I would have bled to death. But miraculously, the main artery in my leg was pinched by the electricity cable, the emergency workers told me afterwards. The main artery in my severed arm was cauterized again when I was electrocuted. It’s almost unbelievable.”

“I remember I was drowning in my own blood pouring out of my leg and arm. Right up my nose and straight into my throat. Because I was hanging upside down the whole time.” (Read more below the post)

Littledike ended up spending a year in the hospital and requiring 21 operations. Her left leg was too badly damaged to be saved.

Five amputations

“I had a total of five amputations because they tried to save my leg as much as possible, because the more leg you have to walk with a prosthetic leg, the easier it is. But my leg kept rotting so they had to remove an extra piece each time.”

The teenager still remembers the moment her father told her she would lose her leg. But two years later she is cheerful again, despite her disability. She works, she plays sports, she dances. “I realize that I am a lucky person. Because normally I wouldn’t have survived this,” she realizes.

Nakia Molina and Jacob Rasmussen, her friends who were in the car with her, were taken away with shattered vertebrae and bones, but made a full recovery. They are now trying to convince other young people to always wear their seat belts. If they had done that themselves, the consequences would not have been nearly as dramatic. Certainly not for Littledike.
