Kazakhstanis spend more than half of their expenses on food. The situation is worse only in Africa

In Kazakhstan, 56% of consumer spending goes on food, Liter.kz reports with reference to Finprom.

In 023, Kazakhstanis’ spending on food and other goods reached an average of 1.1 million tenge per person per year, which is 15.2% more than a year earlier. There was an average of 89.4 thousand tenge per month per capita, compared to 77.6 thousand tenge in 2022.

The highest household expenditures were recorded in Almaty, where the average annual expenditure per capita was 1.5 million tenge (or 121.4 thousand tenge per month), which increased by 14.7% over the year. In second place in terms of expenditure is Astana (1.4 million tenge per year per capita or 116.1 thousand tenge per month), and in third place is the Karaganda region (1.3 million tenge per year per capita or 111.7 thousand tenge per month).

The lowest expenditure figures were recorded in the Turkestan region: 739.4 thousand tenge per year or 61.6 thousand tenge per month per person. They are followed by Shymkent (837.1 thousand tenge per year or 69.8 thousand tenge per month) and Kyzylorda region (859.9 thousand tenge per year or 71.7 thousand tenge per month).

Almost all of the population’s expenses (92.1%) come from consumer spending. In total, consumer spending in 2023 amounted to 988.5 thousand tenge per person per year, which is 14.7% more than a year earlier. Of these, 550.8 thousand tenge were for food products (an average of 45.9 thousand tenge per month), 248.8 thousand tenge for non-food products (an average of 20.7 thousand tenge per month), and 188.9 thousand tenge — for paid services (15.7 thousand tenge per month).

Expenses for repaying loans and debt increased by 22.3% and amounted to 62.5 thousand tenge per person per year, which is an average of 5.2 thousand tenge per month. Among the expenses on food products, the largest part falls on food and non-alcoholic drinks (505.2 thousand tenge), as well as on eating out (22.2 thousand tenge), tobacco products (15.2 thousand tenge) and alcoholic drinks (6 .5 thousand tenge).

For the full year 2023 in Kazakhstan, the share of food products was 51.1%, and the share of food products in general was 55.7%

The situation was worse than in Kazakhstan only in such countries as Nigeria (59%), Myanmar (56.6%), Kenya (56.1%), Bangladesh (52.7%), Laos (50.6% ) and Angola (49.7%). Note that 105 countries were assessed.
