Journalist and political commentator Marc Chavannes has died at the age of 77. His family reported this to the NRC, the newspaper for which he worked from 1973 to 2015, including as a correspondent in London, Paris and Washington. NRC praises him for “his insightful yet thoughtful and entertaining analyses.”
Throughout his long career, Chavannes has received numerous awards. For example, she won the Prize for journalistic journalism, which is now called De Tegel, and has twice received the Anne Vondeling Prize for journalists who report politics clearly.
He was also a professor of journalism at the University of Groningen for many years, where he trained a young generation of journalists. He also found himself in the company of younger colleagues outside the university walls. In 2015 he left “his” NRC to join De Correspondent, founded by his young former NRC colleagues Rob Wijnberg and Ernst-Jan Pfauth.
Infinite curiosity
“He’s been at the NRC for 43 years and to just say, ‘Yes, I’ve got a bunch of young dogs here who have an idea, I’m going to join forces with them,’ that characterizes him,” says editor-in-chief Rob Wijnberg of De Correspondent in response upon the death of Chavannes. “He was a journalist longer than me on earth, but he wasn’t too good at anything and he never felt superior to others. He was present at every meeting or editorial meeting.”
Even though Chavannes was already seventy years old and had been active in journalism for years, according to Wijnberg he never behaved like the journalist who had already seen everything. “Even though – let’s face it – he had already seen everything. His curiosity and desire to learn were infinite. When you spoke to him it was as if you were dealing with a journalist who had just started, he was so curious. He always wanted to know what we thought of the his pieces.”
Chavannes remained active as a journalist and commentator until the end. Last week it was possible to listen to it NPO Radio 1. In his political diary published last month in De Correspondent he wrote about PVV plans contrary to the law, including an appeal to the negotiating parties to give up on this. Immediately after the elections he warned about the risks of collaboration with the PVV.
