Jose Mourinho: In search of his lost glory

It was January 16 when Roma suddenly announced the end of their partnership with Jose Mourinho. Whereas in the previous period the reports from Italy and the “Eternal City” even spoke of an extension of the Portuguese’s contract. Ten days before his 61st birthday, the Special One got… a bitter gift from the management of the Italian club who thought that the team needed an electric shock to change the bad image it was showing on the pitch. Which – by the way – happened, with Daniele De Rossi giving breath and impetus to Roma who under his guidance are doing much better than before.

“It’s hard to understand how a manager who reached two European finals was sacked,” was Mourinho’s question after his exit from Roma, which he led to the Conference League in his first season and the Europa League final the following. As it usually happens to him though, the hard times start in the third season where the dismissal comes. It’s no coincidence that all of his sacks over the past decade have come during his third season on the bench. Which is not only good for his reputation, but certainly very good for his pocket.

The fall and compensations

It will not be an exaggeration to say that Mourinho has become the king of compensation. He now has six dismissals to his credit and in total it is estimated that he has collected more than 80 million euros from them. There are many who believe that football has outgrown him. After all, his career is on the decline and this is also evidenced by the teams he took over recently. Roma is not a small team and neither is Tottenham. But they are far from the elite of Europe and certainly do not belong to the group of teams that Mourinho would have looked at until a decade ago, when he was still at the peak of his coaching career.

Of course, the fact that he led Roma to two European finals, with one victory and one defeat that he considers was not purely competitive, carries them like badges. As well as the fact that with him on the bench appeared the most… normal Manchester United of the post-Ferguson era. It’s not a lie and he has every reason to be proud of them. But they are still achievements that are far from what established him in the world’s consciousness as the Special One. The one who won the Champions League with Porto, who put Chelsea in the elite and led them to winning titles, who led Inter to the top of Europe, who put Real back on the road to success and in an era when he was facing the perhaps the greatest team of all time. Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona.

Ready for the next challenge

That Mourinho is a far cry from today’s. However, there is no doubt that in his mind he was, is and will always be the best. Because this is Mourinho. Selfish, arrogant, self-righteous. But he has his own way and this cannot be ignored. There are few players he has worked with who do not have something good to say about him. And now what; “I’m ready to start again. I don’t need to rest or think like I usually do, I’m ready. I feel strong and okay, I’m really ready,” he recently stated in an interview with Fabrizio Romano.

Were you expecting something different? That he would give up? That he would like to rest or that he is bored? We probably wouldn’t be talking about Mourinho if we claimed that. “I don’t want to make the wrong decision. I have to be patient. My goal is to start again in the summer”, then added the Portuguese who is apparently waiting for proposals to evaluate which one is ideal for him. His name is already “playing” for clubs inside and outside of Europe who are able to give him a very large contract. It was written for Fenerbahce, for clubs from Saudi Arabia where he has also said in the past that “One day I will go to Saudi Arabia”. Is that day coming?

Last summer, however, he was closely tagged by Al Hilal and Al Ittihad who allegedly offered him tens of millions of euros to take them over. He was then in Rome and believed in the project he was running there. He turned down the offers, but now that he’s free, he has every reason to seriously consider it and it doesn’t seem at all unlikely that he’ll make the move outside of Europe. Apart from the money, which always interests him, he will definitely want to achieve things there as well by winning the championship and the Champions League. What is certain is that the summer is expected to be “hot” for Mourinho, while it is not excluded that if he has not found a team by the time of the Euro, there will also be interest from a national team in his person. Also a challenge that he has not tried so far in his long career.
