Jaron Ennis challenge Terence Crawford but Bud wants a boxer with a big name in the current welterweight class. This week, it was announced that Jaron ”Boots” Ennis signed a multi-fight contract with Matchroom Boxing.

The decision also ends the mystery about which promoter the dynamic welterweight boxer will compete with at a critical time in his career. And now the question is: Which opponent will help Ennis decide?

Jaron Ennis says that if Terence ”Bud” Crawford wants to continue at welterweight, the only fight that matters is against him. “It’s either you fight me or you fight nobody,” Jaron Ennis said.

The signing of Jaron Ennis comes after news last year that the fighter was elevated from interim welterweight titleholder to official titleholder, after the sanctioning governing body stripped Terence Crawford of his belt. Since being confirmed as the permanent title holder, Jaron Ennis (31-0, 28 KOs) has been mostly outside the ring.

In his last fight, he managed to defend his interim belt by beating Roiman Villa in the 10th round last July. The news of the collaboration with Matchroom brings hope that Ennis is ready to be as active and ambitious as possible in choosing the level of competition – as a fighter considered to be talented should be. “Staying active is important,” Ennis said in a Matchroom YouTube video. “I can’t wait to get back in the ring – and I’ll be better than ever.”

Jaron Ennis says he doesn’t yet know who he will face in the ring, although his new promoter, Eddie Hearn, told Charlie Parsons that the first opponent Boots will face under the Matchroom banner will be Cody Crowley (22-0, 9 KOs). Hearn also said that this fight will likely be a home fight for Ennis – which will take place in Philadelphia, in June or July.

The fight against Crowley would be Ennis’ first mandatory fight to defend his world title, which is the first step in the direction most boxing fans want for this talented boxer. But the ultimate goal for Ennis seems to be a step towards lasting glory. “I want to see him fight Terence Crawford,” said Eddie Hearn. “Terence would only accept that fight if he was big enough. I would back Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis to fight anyone.”

Ennis, on the other hand, is not so sure that he will get the chance to face the man some observers believe is the best fighter in the world. Since Crawford is 37 and Ennis is 26, time is of the essence. With Crawford apparently eyeing other opponents, a hypothetical fight with Ennis risks being consigned to boxing’s most unlikely dustbin
.
“I’m not sure if Terence Crawford wants that fight or not,” Ennis said. “He’s said several times publicly that he doesn’t look at me, he doesn’t look at me, I’m not a big enough name, I’m not this, I’m not that. But there’s no one else left for him to fight.”
