They were singers, actresses, ministers, athletes… their existence, just like their disappearance, marked our daily lives. In 2023, many celebrities have left us, often in the twilight of their lives, sometimes suddenly and in the prime of their lives.

Here is a list, far from being exhaustive, of artistic, political, religious figures, known for their voice, their decisions or even their writings, who have died in the last 12 months.

January 7: Russell Banks

Considered one of the greatest contemporary American novelists, Russell Banks died of cancer on Saturday, January 7. A progressive author, he was particularly known for his novels about the American working class.

January 10: Jeff Beck

Virtuoso of the guitar, and more generally of jazz, blues and even hard rock, Jeff Beck died at the age of 78 on Tuesday 10 January. The musician had “suddenly contracted bacterial meningitis”.

January 17: Sister André

He had lived through two world wars, the Cold War, 18 presidents of the French Republic and was about to celebrate his 119th birthday. Sister André, doyen of humanity, died on January 17 at the age of 118.

February 2: Louis Velle

French cinema giant Louis Velle died on Thursday 2 February, aged 96. He has appeared in many films (The intrepid, the young lady from Avignon…), films and TV series and has graced the cinema scene.

February 3: Paco Rabanne

Iconic fashion designer Paco Rabanne, real name Francisco Rabaneda y Cuervo, died at the age of 88 on Friday 3 February at his home in Finistère. Nicknamed “the metalworker of fashion”, he has left his mark in both high fashion and perfumery.

February 25: François Hadji-Lazaro

Musician, street poet, activist artist… The founder of the groups Les Garçons Bouchers and Pigalle, François Hadji-Lazaro, died on Saturday 25 February 2023. He was 66 years old.

1st Mars: Only Fontaine

He had left his mark on world football. Fontaine himself died on Wednesday 1 March at the age of 89. World Cup top scorer with 13 goals in the 1958 edition, he is one of France’s biggest names.

March 3: Tom Sizemore

Hospitalized on February 18 after a ruptured aneurysm, actor Tom Sizemore ultimately did not survive and died on March 3. Known particularly for his role in We have to save Private Ryanhe had worked with the greatest directors.

March 17: Lance Reddick

Deputy for the Var and mayor of Fréjus for almost twenty years, François Léotard was Minister of Culture from 1986 to 1988, under the Chirac government, and Minister of Defense from 1993 to 1995, under the Balladur government.

He died at the age of 81.

May 9: Georges Kiejman

Great criminal lawyer and former Minister of Justice, Georges Kiejman was known for having directed important criminal trials: murder of Malik Oussekine, Marie Trintignant, Charlie Hebdo caricatures… He had also defended Roman Polanski.

May 24: Tina Turner

World star and queen of rock’n’roll, Tina Turner has died after a long illness.

June 1: Guillaume Bats

The comedian, who suffered from brittle bones, died on June 1. He was 36 years old. It was his friend Jérémy Ferrari who discovered the body.

July 11: Milan Kundera

Considered a sacred monster of literature, at the origin of numerous works, such as The unbearable lightness of being, The writer Milan Kundera has died at the age of 94.

July 16: Jane Birkin

The British singer, naturalized French, Jane Birkin, died on Sunday 16 July. At the age of 76, she was found lifeless in her home in Paris.

July 25: Sinéad O’Connor

She was known for her cover of Prince’s iconic song, Nothing Compares 2 U OR The emperor’s new clothes : Irish singer Sinéad O’Connor has died at the age of 56.

August 1: Geneviève de Fontenay

The former leader of the Miss France committee Geneviève de Fontenay died on Tuesday 1 August at the age of 90. She died in her sleep from cardiac arrest.

The 1957 “Miss Eleganza” took the helm of the committee in 1981 before moving on in 2016.

August 8: Jean-Michel Leulliot

He was a figure of television sports journalism in the 70s and 80s. Jean-Michel Leulliot has died in Paris at the age of 84, his family announced on Tuesday 8 August.

August 15: Gérard Leclerc

Through France 2 et CNews, the journalist Gérard Leclerc died in a plane crash that he himself was piloting in Loire-Atlantique. There were two other people on board.

August 20: Wahid Bouzidi

He was a figure in the Jamel Comedy Club. French-Algerian comedian Wahid Bouzidi died on Sunday 20 August, a few days after suffering a stroke. He was 45 years old.

September 3: José Sébéloué

José Sébéloué, founding member of Compagnie Créole, died on the morning of Sunday 3 September, at the age of 74. Whether on guitar, percussion or vocals, he “infused the group with its color and rhythm”, according to Productions Martin Leclerc.

September 15: Fernando Botero

The Colombian painter and sculptor Fernando Botero, famous for his voluptuous figures and considered one of the greatest artists of the 20th century, died on Friday 15 September at the age of 91.

September 25: David McCallum

Actor David McCallum, who played medical examiner “Ducky” on the series for 20 seasons NCIS died at age 90 in New York.

September 28: Michael Gambon

Actor Michael Gambon, who played Dumbledore in the Harry Potter saga, has died at the age of 82. He replaced Richard Harris, who died in 2002, as director of the magic school.

October 3: Jean-Pierre Elkabbach

The famous radio and television journalist Jean-Pierre Elkabbach died in Paris on October 3. His voice and face have resonated across our airwaves for several decades.

October 12: Marwan Berreni

The Plus belle la vie actor was found dead on October 12 in a house in Corcelles-en-Beaujolais (Rhone). He had not given any news since the beginning of August. It is likely that he is dead at this time.

The suicide trail was favored by investigators.

October 13: Hubert Reeves

He was one of the greatest science communicators and an environmental activist. The French-Canadian astrophysicist Hubert Reeves died on Friday 13 October.

October 28: Matthew Perry

November 30: Shane MacGowan

December 12: Andre Braugher

December 15: Guy Marchand

He nicknamed himself the Guignol of Buttes Chaumont. The actor and singer Guy Marchand died on Friday 15 December at the age of 86.

December 26: Patrick Buisson

A great figure of the conservative right, Patrick Buisson was above all the pen and closest advisor to former president Nicolas Sarkozy. He died on Tuesday 26 December at the age of 74.

December 27: Jacques Delors

Former minister, former president of the European Commission and great architect of the construction of the EU, Jacques Delors died on 27 December at the age of 98.
