ISSS’s 24/7 orthopedic operating room has performed more than 800 surgeries in 2024

More than 800 surgeries have been carried out so far in 2024 in the 24/7 operating room of the General Hospital of the Salvadoran Social Security Institute (ISSS), which was enabled to benefit patients and expand surgical services in the specialty of Orthopedics.

“In the exclusive operating room for orthopedic emergencies 24/7 at the General Hospital we work daily to save and improve the lives of Salvadorans,” explained Social Security.

The monthly average of procedures in this operating room amounts to 200, responding to accident events, improving surgical opportunity, reducing the high demand due to delays, greater availability of beds, shortening the percentage of hospital occupancy and reducing the morbidity and mortality of patients due to the surgical delay, indicated Social Security.

According to the institution, the General Hospital is a national reference center, where highly complex traumas due to work accidents, traffic accidents and other situations that arise are treated.

In 2022, the ISSS authorities expanded the hours of the operating rooms available in this care center, of which, six operating rooms remain enabled from 7:00 in the morning to 7:00 at night to attend to elective surgeries.

In the case of these operating rooms, they serve medical specialties such as otorhinolaryngology, neurosurgery, general surgery, maxillofacial surgery, orthopedics, urology, plastic surgery, endocrine neck surgery and vascular surgery. In addition, they have international quality standards and highly trained health personnel to meet the demand of patients in the hospital.

On the other hand, it is from this ISSS care center that Plan Titan is activated and coordinated, an emergency and disaster care protocol that interrelates other Social Security hospitals.

Once Plan Titan is activated, plastic surgery, orthopedics, radiology, and general surgery teams are summoned, emergency surgery rooms and an ambulance system are activated, and doctors are sent to the scene of the emergency.

The implementation of the plan involves the Medical Surgical, Policlinico Zacamil, and Amatepec hospitals; In addition, the participation of different medical specialties to provide support to patients selected according to the severity of their injuries.
