Three children of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh and several of his grandchildren were killed this Wednesday in an Israeli bombing in Gaza, according to the Islamist group.
“With this pain and blood we create hope, a future and freedom for our people, our cause and our nation,” Haniyeh said in a statement shortly after the news broke.
The Israeli Army has not yet confirmed the attack, which took place during Eid al-Fitr, or the Festival of Fasting, which marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan.
In an interview with the Qatari media Al Jazeera, Haniyeh himself explained that his children were visiting relatives in the Al Shati refugee camp.in the northwest of Gaza City, when they were attacked.
The head of Hamas’s political bureau, who has been in exile in Qatar for years and heads the political arm of the Islamist group, He assured that at least 60 members of his family have died since the war in Gaza began.
In a statement, the Gazan government confirmed that five people were killed and several others were injured in an Israeli attack on a car carrying several of Haniyeh’s children and grandchildren, although it did not give names.
“We ask all countries of the free world to stop this aggressive war by putting pressure on the criminal occupation and ending their continued aggression against our Palestinian people,” the group said.
The attack comes when Hamas is studying the latest truce proposal resulting from negotiations in Cairo, which according to Israeli media would allow the release of 40 hostages in Gaza in exchange for a temporary ceasefire and the release of hundreds of Palestinian prisoners.
However, the deal does not include the return of displaced Palestinians to their homes or the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces, key demands of the Islamist group.
