Iran has successfully completed the first phase of the Karun nuclear power plant in the southwestern province of Khuzestan, built with its own technology. Mohammad Islami, head of the country’s Atomic Energy Agency, confirmed this information.

During a tour of the province on Friday (February 23), Islami said work on the Darkhovin nuclear power plant was progressing well. However, Iranian authorities initially decided to cancel the project after a foreign company broke the contract and left.

The head of the organization said that even if the foreign company leaves, we have not decided to finish the project ourselves. Now the first phase work is completed successfully.

Before the Islamic Revolution in 1979, Iran signed a two billion dollar contract with a French company to implement the project. But the French company withdrew from the project after the Islamic Revolution.

Islami said the foreign company left without fulfilling the contract due to the ban.

This self-financed power plant is capable of generating 300 MW of electricity. It is located on the banks of the Karun River, about 70 km south of Ahvaz.
