The recent discovery of full-slatted pig fattening impressively shows the animal cruelty of this form of farming. But Minister Totschnig studiously ignores animal suffering

The fully slatted floor means months of torment for the affected pigs. 92% of the pigs develop painfully inflamed joints. Many suffer from lung and eye infections. Due to a lack of employment opportunities and boredom, they begin to bite each other’s (docked) tails and ears. Minister Totschnig could insist on compliance with the law, for example access to a physically comfortable lying area, which all pigs are entitled to according to the 1st Animal Husbandry Ordinance. But instead he ignores the suffering the animals are exposed to, even though 96% of the Austrian population wants pigs to have straw.
