The objective of the Atlas is to provide information on beekeeping in Mexico, from the biology of bees, characteristics of honey, to aspects related to economic activity around domesticated speciess, in addition to breeding, existing government support and the production volume of the federal entities, among other issues.

By 2023, beekeeping will employ 48 thousand beekeepers, distributed mainly in Yucatán, Campeche and Chiapas.

In the last decade, an average annual production of 59 thousand tons of honey was recorded. Yucatán, Campeche, Jalisco and Chiapas generate more than 40% of the country’s bee production. The above positions Mexico among the top 10 places in terms of global honey production.

In our country, annual per capita honey consumption ranged between 163 and 280 grams, in the period 2011-2022, according to the Agri-Food Panorama.

Between 2014 and 2021, the bee producers in the country exported around 34.5 thousand tons annually. With this, Mexico was among the main exporters of this food, along with China, New Zealand and Argentina. For the same period, the average annual income from honey exports was 110 million dollars. The main destinations were the United States, Germany, Belgium, Saudi Arabia and the United Kingdom.
