The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is taking all the tough decisions about domestic games. Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer have been cut from their central contract after refusing to play in the country’s domestic cricket Ranji Trophy.
Apart from this, cricketers like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli should also play domestically, says Kirti Azad, a member of India’s World Cup-winning team in 1983.
“It’s a very good move by the board directors,” Keerthi said. Everyone should play Ranji Trophy cricket. But currently the emphasis is on IPL. It is good, it is entertaining but real cricket is (five) day cricket. Playing domestic cricket is good, it keeps you connected to the game.’
Referring to Rohit-Kohli, Keerthy said, ‘But whenever you are retired, even if you are a Rohit Sharma or a Virat Kohli, you should play domestic cricket. That (state) gives you an opportunity to become a player, get selected and then play for the country.’
But Keerthi feels that not only Iyer and Kishan, but everyone who does not play domestic should be punished. He said, ‘It is not right to punish only two people. I think everyone should be punished. Everyone should look through the same mirror.’
At that time, Kirti also questioned why Indian cricketers do not want to play domestically. He has shown that England cricketers voluntarily play casual cricket when there is no national team game.
Keerthy said, ‘Look at domestic (England) cricket. There are more than 20 teams and numerous three-day and four-day games in addition to T20 cricket. Every player is involved there. If a player is left out of the Test squad, he goes on to play in domestic cricket. ‘
