India objects to US comments on Kejriwal’s arrest – 2024-03-28 06:04:36

New Delhi has strongly objected to US comments on the arrest of India’s key opposition leader and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. On Wednesday (March 27), India’s Ministry of External Affairs stated this objection. This was reported by the British news agency Reuters.

Washington said it was closely monitoring reports of Kejriwal’s arrest. The US is encouraging India to pursue a fair legal process in this matter. India objected two days after the US comments.

Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is in power in the capital region and the northern state of Punjab. He was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), the central financial crime investigation agency, last week. He was arrested a few weeks before India’s general election on April 19.

Many important Aam Aadmi Party leaders are also in jail. It is being claimed that the party has been illegally arrested on trumped-up charges.

India’s central government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have denied political interference in the incident.

India’s legal processes are based on an independent judiciary, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement. Which is committed to objective and timely results. It is unreasonable to doubt this.

In diplomacy, states are expected to respect the sovereignty and internal affairs of others, the statement added. This responsibility is even greater in democratic countries. Otherwise it may set a bad precedent.

Kejriwal’s arrest after the election schedule was announced has angered opponents challenging Modi and drawn international attention.

Germany also commented on Kejriwal’s arrest before the US. Berlin said it hoped the case would uphold standards related to the independence of the judiciary and basic democratic principles.

New Delhi summoned the German ambassador in protest over the comments. News agency ANI reported that the Acting Deputy Chief of the US Mission in New Delhi was also summoned on Wednesday.

India and USA are close countries. Washington and Delhi maintain strategic ties, and Washington considers New Delhi an important partner in its efforts to counter China’s growing global influence.
