Johnny Depp is best known for his Hollywood film work, but he also creates as a musician and painter, releasing his first collection of art in 2022, just weeks after winning a defamation lawsuit against ex-wife Amber Heard.

Depp unveiled a painting inspired by his ex-partner Vanessa Paradis. According to a Sky News report, he described it as: “he’s everything I could never be.” It’s part of the actor’s latest collection of four tarot-inspired artworks. The 61-year-old actor said that The lovers, The emperor and The poweras well as The Empress when creating the image, he drew on his life, dreams and acting career.

The Empress is a tribute to the mother of Paradis and Depp’s children, Lily-Rose and Jack, and is based on one of her old paintings that Paradis used in 2007 Divinidylle used for his album cover. It shows a portrait of a woman wearing an obscured crown.

We’ve been very, very close for a few decades. I know him and I know who he is deep down. He is everything I could never be… The crown looks like it has weathered the storms. It shows a certain courage and commitment. Whatever happens in the world behind it, it still shines

Elephants are mysterious creatures

Depp and Paradis were together from 1998 to 2012. With Heard, with whom the 2011 Rumnapló met on the set of the film, started dating shortly after announcing their breakup.

The Power represented by the elephant is also linked to its connection with Paradise. Depp says the image was also inspired by one of his earlier paintings, which he did when they were expecting their first child.

According to Sky News, Depp describes a The Loverst as “the beginning of the story”, where a male figure holds a rose and “protects” the female figure. However, he says that the emperor, the faceless figure, cannot necessarily be trusted. “Replaceable. Disposable. I certainly wouldn’t be able to, I wouldn’t dare to give my own face as emperor. Never. The emperor is a bit faceless, because if you put the emperor next to the empress, who would you trust more? In the Empress.”

Magic Tarot

The actor says that he has always been extremely curious about the tarot and that the paintings contain certain periods of his life. Each card painting is his vision of his tarot deck.

So what is tarot? A deck of 78 cards used for card games and divination. One side of the cards has symbolic images, the other side has the same color and pattern. Its origin is unknown. It probably originates from the East, and may have been spread in Europe by Gypsy fortune tellers, Egyptian Mamluks and Moorish conquerors. Some people believe it “discovers” the ancient knowledge of Atlantis, but many see it as just a simple, fun divination card.

Difficult years

Johnny Depp returned to the big screen earlier this year Jeanne Du Barry in the historical drama. It was her first major film role after lawsuits against Heard in the US and against the publisher of The Sun newspaper in the UK – in the latter case, following her 2020 case, the High Court found that Depp had abused Heard.

The actor sued Heard in 2022 over a 2018 article he wrote for The Washington Post about his experiences as a domestic violence survivor, which his lawyers say falsely accused him of being an abuser. He won this lawsuit, clearing his name.
