Dávid Vitézy spoke on the Radio Free Europe broadcast, among other things, about what he thinks about Gergely Karácsony’s statement, according to which Alexandra Szentkirályi can withdraw from the mayoral race.
The transport and urban mobility expert believes that Fidesz cannot win the mayoral election in June, but that by withdrawing they would also jeopardize their own position in the general assembly. Dávid Vitézy (unlike Kárácsonny) does not count on the scenario of Alexandra Szentkirályi stepping back.
As he said, they are still at the very beginning of the campaign, but “in this field of three, Gergely Karácsony has the greatest experience in unexpected setbacks.” Dávid Vitézy recalled that Gergely Karácsony stepped back in favor of Péter Márki-Zay in the 2022 elections, “letting down the entire opposition voting base”.
I can even imagine him withdrawing from this competition
– said Dávid Vitézy.
He noted that the mayor should decide whether he wants to satisfy the majority of Budapest residents or Ferenc Gyurcsány. He added that the entire city policy is currently being conducted on Facebook, so for this reason “we can hardly point to anything about what happened in the last five years”. According to him, Gergely Karácsony will run again as prime minister candidate in the 2026 parliamentary elections.
He would definitely confront the government
The candidate for mayor also stated that he has nothing to do with Fidesz, although he admitted that he did not see Péter Márki-Zay as suitable to lead the country in the 2022 parliamentary election, so he finally gave his trust to the government.
He explained that he wants to structure his campaign in such a way that it actually speaks to the people of Budapest. According to him, there can be “leadership beyond party political battles for Budapest, which confronts the government”.
He added that, as mayor, he is very determined to do this, among other things, so that health care does not operate in its current form in Budapest. As he said, health care in Budapest today is significantly worse than, for example, in Nyíregyháza, Debrecen or Győr. He is also ready to confront János Lázár regarding the renovation of the HÉVs.
He did not visit Péter Magyar, but he counts on his vote
According to Dávid Vitézy, neither on his part, nor to his knowledge, on the part of the LMP, was there any intention to establish contact with Péter Magyar.
“Péter Magyar is a declared national political actor who is trying to formulate a new political proposal from his point of view to the country’s voters. I am advocating that Budapest politics should not be derived from national politics. So I am not asking for his support, we do not work together in any way in this regard, I do not even know him personally,” explained Dávid Vitézy.
He added that who Péter Magyar votes for as a Budapest voter is his own decision. He recalled that the lawyer in Partizán said that he would not vote for either Gergely Karácsony or Alexandra Szentkirályi, so as a voter, he also counts on Péter Magyar’s vote.
