Researchers at the Nuremberg University of Music analyzed the lyrics of more than 12,000 English-language songs in several genres written between 1980 and 2020. They concluded that the texts were simpler, repetitive and aggressive.

Publika.az reports that the research was published in “Scientific Reports” magazine.

In addition, the publication noted that most of these songs sound more angry. The study compared contemporary songs with songs written by US legend Bob Dylan, who won the Nobel Prize for literature in the early 1960s.

Eva Zangerle, an expert at the University of Innsbruck, refused to name any of the young authors, stressing that the lyrics are a “mirror of society”, reflecting its values, emotions and hobbies.

“Over the past 40 years, we’ve seen dramatic changes in the music landscape – from how music is sold to how it’s created,” the expert noted.

Similar studies have been conducted before, which revealed a decrease in the number of positive, cheerful words, and an increase in songs expressing feelings of anger and disgust.

The words “I” or “my” are becoming more and more popular in modern songs, which is not a good thing. The number of identical lines has increased the most in rap.
