INTERNATIONAL – A new generation, which embodies a dusted-off vision of the monarchy. This Sunday, January 14, in Denmark, Prince Frederick becomes King Frederick X and succeeds his mother, Queen Margaret, after 52 years of reign. 55 years old, the latter stays away from the usual ways of the royal family and is much appreciated for his image of a “normal” man. His popularity rating exceeds 80%.
A king “like all the others”
“I don’t want to lock myself in a fortress, I want to be myself, a human being”, he declared last December, stating that he wanted to be faithful to this principle, even on the throne. A declaration that guides one’s way of life, even within the family. His choice to send his two children, aged 11 and 18, to school in the public system had had an impact on public opinion. The eldest, Prince Christian, will thus be the first of the heirs to the crown to have gone to nursery.
Even more, the new king’s wife, Mary Donaldson, was not from a royal family or a “noble” family. A lawyer by training, she is Australian and met Prince Frederik in a bar in Sydney during the 2000 Olympic Games.

He eventually continued his studies, graduating in Political Science at Aarhus University. With a French-speaking father, he speaks French, English and German.
Ultimately, it was precisely his military training in the three Danish defense corps that earned him the respect of his subjects and the maturity that he seemed to lack. The prince was notably part of the elite corps of combat swimmers, managing in 1995 to rank among the four candidates who successfully passed all the tests out of around 300 entrants.
The prince is also known for his commitment to the climate crisis, which is a continuation of his mother’s choices. During her New Year’s speech, she said: “We need to address climate change. The consequences are not just ahead. They are already here and they are extreme. Most Danes are fully aware of this, although it has been difficult for some of us to be fully aware of it. Together, we must now find the hope and determination to act.” The tone is set.
