Finally, Chittagong Port got 500 acres of government land for the Bay-Terminal project at a cost of three crores and three rupees. The government allotted these places at a symbolic price for the Prime Minister’s priority project under implementation along the Outer Ring Road on the banks of the Bay of Bengal.

Chittagong district administration wrote to the port authority on May 2 to submit the fee fixed by the government for these lands. In the letter, it is requested to deposit 1 crore 1 taka in three separate installments of 3 crore 3 taka to Bangladesh Bank against 500.7063 acres of land in three mouzas.

The 500.7063 acres of land settled from the district administration includes 62.2252 acres in South Kattali Mauza, 339.2675 acres in North Halishahar Mauza and 99.2136 acres of Khas land in Halishahar Mauza.

Confirming the matter, Chittagong District Administration Revenue Deputy Collector (RDC) Panna Akhtar told Jago News that the Ministry has given approval for long-term settlement of 500 acres of government land for Bay-Terminal at a symbolic price. According to the instructions of the Ministry of Lands, a letter has been written to the port authority to deposit the amount of 1 crore 1 taka 3 crore 3 crores in three separate installments to the Bangladesh Bank on Thursday morning.

Deputy Manager (Estate) of Chittagong Port Authority, Muhammad Shihab Uddin Jago said, long-term settlement of 500 acres of land has been obtained from the district administration for the Bay-Terminal project at a symbolic price. Meanwhile, a letter has been sent from the district administration to submit the price fixed by the government. He said that these prices will be submitted to Bangladesh Bank based on invoices at the scheduled time.

It is known that to increase the capacity of Chittagong port, the government has taken up a project to construct a bay terminal on a vast land and near the sea in Patenga and Halishahar sea coasts of the city. The land acquisition process started from 2016 to implement the Bay-Terminal Project of Chittagong Port. In the meantime, almost the project area has been filled and made usable. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the project on November 1, 2018.

Those concerned said that the bay terminal will have a draft of about 12 meters (part of the ship in the water) and ships of any length can be moored here. Whereas at present Chittagong port JT-berth can accommodate ships with a maximum draft of 10 meters and a length of 200 meters.

Also, 35 to 50 ships can be accommodated simultaneously at the Bay-Terminal. Even if the Chittagong port is managed from a tide-dependent basis, the Bay Terminal will not have this complication. As a result, congestion at Chittagong port will be reduced to a large extent. Import-export trade will speed up due to cost reduction. The economic growth of the country will increase manifold if the Bay-Terminal is opened.
