In 15 years, 16,600 children were born from the state in vitro fertilization program – 2024-04-01 14:47:20

The center for assisted reproduction, which finances with state funds in vitro procedures for couples with reproductive problems, has turned 15 years old. During this period, the center has helped more than 38,000 couples with reproductive problems in clinics across the country. With the organizational and financial support of the center, more than 16,600 children were born, the Ministry of Health announced.

The center reports that, together with invitro clinics in the country, they have achieved steadily increasing results in terms of the number of clinical pregnancies, births and live births.

For the past 2023 a total of 1509 clinical pregnancies, 1358 births and 1594 children were achieved, which is about 2% of all children born in the country.

Since last year, the state already finances in vitro procedures worth up to BGN 6,000 instead of BGN 5,000.

According to the regulations, couples with reproductive problems have the right to finance 4 in vitro experiments.

The center finances the following assisted reproduction activities:

• controlled ovarian (hyper)stimulation (COHS) with medicinal products

• control of the stimulation process through ultrasound examinations and hormonal studies;

• In vitro methods: follicle puncture under ultrasound control; classic in vitro fertilization; fertilization through the so-called ICSI; transfer of fresh embryos; cryopreservation of pre-implantation embryos or oocytes; transfer of thawed embryos that have been cryopreserved with funds from the center; assisted reproduction of a spontaneous cycle.

The Center for Assisted Reproduction finances these activities in the presence of the following indications:

• tubal sterility in women;

• male factor sterility;

• sterility in women associated with lack of ovulation;

• infertility with an etiology not clarified by conventional diagnostic methods;

• proven monogenic genetic disease or proven balanced chromosomal mutation in at least one of the partners;

• proven oncological disease in the woman.
