Imran Khan’s party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has nominated Omar Ayub as its candidate for the next Prime Minister of Pakistan. Omar Ayub is the grandson of former military dictator Ayub Khan.

PTI leader Asad Qaiser said that this decision was taken after talking to the founder of the party in Adiala Jail. The former speaker of the National Assembly of Pakistan said that Imran Khan has ordered PTI Secretary General Omar Ayub to be the prime ministerial candidate.

Kaiser also said, with all political parties protesting against the election results; He has been specifically tasked to liaise with JEUI-F, ANP and QWP.

He said, we want everyone to make a strategy. Because the judgment of the people has been stolen. It was the worst and most rigged election in our history. The PTI leader also claimed that there was a lack of credibility in this election.

Who is Omar Ayub?
Omar Ayub is the grandson of former dictator General Ayub Khan of Pakistan. His father Gohar Ayub Khan was one of the senior leaders of the Pakistan Muslim League. Gohar Ayub Khan became the foreign minister in Nawaz Sharif’s government in 1997 and was also the Speaker of the National Assembly from 1990 to 1993.

Following his father’s footsteps, Omar Ayub Khan also became an important leader of the Pakistan Muslim League. He was elected to the National Assembly on Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) ticket in 2002 and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) ticket in 2014.

Ayub Khan’s grandson served as the finance minister from 2004 to 2007 during the regime of former military dictator Pervez Musharraf.

However, in June 2015, he lost the post of MP on the orders of the Supreme Court. At that time the election of his constituency was declared null and void. The apex court also ordered the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to hold a by-election in Omar’s constituency. However, Omar Ayub did not contest in that by-election held at the end of 2015.

Omar lost the 2013 general election to a PTI candidate and raised allegations of election rigging. At that time his plea was accepted and re-polling was ordered in seven polling stations. As a result, Ayub was declared the winning candidate in 2014. But in 2015, the Supreme Court forced him to resign.

Three years later, Omar joined PTI in 2018 on Imran Khan’s hand. He handled three ministries in Imran’s government. Omar was first given the power minister, then the petroleum minister and finally the finance minister.

And this time he is the prime ministerial candidate from that PTI.
