“I don’t compete with anyone in the elections, but consider it as an effort and enter the field as a servant. My aim is to serve the common people as I belong to a middle class family.’

This was said by Dr. Sawira Prakash from Bunir district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, who is the candidate of Pakistan People’s Party for the Provincial Assembly Constituency PK 25 in the February 8 elections.

Dr Sveera is the first woman from the Hindu community to contest the general seat from Buner and is expected to win.

Dr. Sveera’s family has been living in Dagar area of Buner for decades and his father Dr. Om Prakash and mother Dr. Ilia Prakash run a medical center in Buner itself.

When we arrived to meet Dr Sawira, our eyes fell on the board of the medical centre, which read: ‘Orphans, widows, madrasa students and the poor will be examined free of charge.’

According to Dr Sawera, an MBBS graduate from Abbottabad, she entered politics after being inspired by her parents’ social services.

He told Independent Urdu: ‘During my medical studies, I noticed that the health system in Bonaire is not good and for a little complicated case, the patient has to be taken to the big city. I have entered the field to solve the same problems.’

Dr Sawera believed that while working in the field of medicine, she could only serve patients, while winning elections as a member of the provincial assembly, she would be able to serve more people through legislation.

She believes that she has never faced discrimination on the basis of religion, but as a woman she certainly felt it.

According to Sawira: ‘One of the purposes of participating in politics is that women and the younger generation can come forward.’

He said that she is the general secretary of Pakistan People’s Party’s women’s wing, but the women’s organization is not formally active here and that is the reason why the support given by men in the election campaign is remarkable.

Dr Sawera said he receives many messages on social media in which people from other parties promise to vote.

‘I have been called the daughter of Bonair, so as a daughter and sister it is now my duty to serve the people of Bonair.’

When asked about the expenses incurred on the elections, he said: ‘People here know that I belong to a middle-class family and people will vote for me on this basis.’

Dr. Sawira’s videos and interviews have also gone viral in India and he is receiving messages from there as well.

Regarding the messages coming from abroad, he said that not only India but also Nepal and Bangladesh are receiving love messages on social media.

Public response

Party workers gathered outside the clinic of Dr Sawira’s father and took selfies with their banners and posters.

Residents of Bonaire who were present were also supporting Dr Sawira while some were appreciating his father’s services in the field of medicine.

The owner of the hotel located near the clinic said that he has been running a hotel near the government hospital for 25 years, but the facilities in the hospital are non-existent.

“I will vote for Dr. Om Prakash’s daughter with the hope that she is still young and can bring positive changes in the field of health,” he said.

Elder Bakhtin Muhammad, who belonged to the People’s Party since the time of former Prime Minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, said that the PPP had become inactive in Buner, but the party has been revived by giving a ticket to a woman.
