Huawei and BJFF win GSMA GLOMO for TECH4ALL Norway’s salmon conservation project – 2024-03-06 08:15:44

Barcelona, Spain, March 5, 2024 (ots/PRNewswire) Huawei and BJFF received the GSMA GLOMO Award for “Outstanding Mobile Contribution to the UN SDGs” at MWC Barcelona 2024 last week for an AI-powered solution to prevent the extinction of wild Atlantic salmon in Norway should.

“We are very honored to accept the GSMA GLOMO for our TECH4ALL project and thank our partner BJFF for their commitment and support,” said Lu Yong, Huawei senior vice president and president of Huawei’s European region. “The salmon project shows the great “The technology’s potential to preserve nature while promoting the sustainable development of local communities. Huawei will continue to use innovative technologies to create a greener world.”

Launched in 2021 as part of Huawei’s TECH4ALL initiative and developed with local partners BJFF, Simula Consulting and Troll Systems, the solution was created over three years in response to an invasive species, the humpback salmon, that is threatening native salmon in Norwegian rivers.

The world’s first solution of its kind filters humpback salmon from the river system and prevents them from migrating upstream to spawn.

“We are very proud to work with Huawei and its partners on this groundbreaking project. The state-of-the-art technology solution we have in Berlevåg is a successful recipe to stop humpback salmon and it is inspiring for us to receive global recognition at MWC Barcelona 2024,” said Geir Kristiansen, Chairman of the BJFF. “This project “Not only protects our rivers and wild Atlantic salmon, but also shows how innovation can solve environmental problems around the world.”

The GLOMO jury described the project as an “excellent and scalable idea – applying self-directed AI and mobile technology to accurately solve a problem, with great execution and impressive results.”

How the solution works

The fish are guided through a cross-river tunnel equipped with an underwater camera and a smart algorithm-controlled gate.

The algorithm identifies different fish species and recognizes, for example, the characteristic hump of the male humpback salmon and the tail pattern of the female animals. With a detection accuracy of over 99%, the system instructs the gate to remain closed to filter the invasive species into a holding basin and opens it to allow other fish to swim upstream.

Between June and September 2023, the latest salmon spawning time in a two-year cycle, pilot projects in the Storleva and Kongsfjord rivers successfully filtered more than 6,000 humpback salmon.

The manual method requires volunteers to stand in the river, identify humpback salmon by their appearance and remove them by hand. Not only is this method labor and time intensive, but many fish are accidentally injured or killed in the process. In comparison, the automated solution does not harm the fish and reduces manual work by around 90%.

background

The pink salmon was introduced into Norwegian rivers in the 1960s to increase the food supply. However, the invasive species spread rapidly and soon began to outcompete wild Atlantic salmon for resources and spawning grounds. Its impacts have caused the native species’ population to halve since the 1980s.

Because salmon is central to Norwegian culture and economy, the issue is a constant source of national concern.

The success of this solution and its potential to be scaled up throughout Norway gives hope that the extinction of wild Atlantic salmon can be prevented.
