WEST END – The Javan rhinoceros is one of Indonesia’s unique and proud animals which is almost extinct. The Javan rhino population in 2024 is estimated to only be around 81 individuals.

This figure is based on the latest data from Ujung Kulon National Park (TNUK), which is the only remaining natural habitat for the Javan rhinoceros in the world.

In 2023, the Javan rhino population will still be recorded at 82 individuals. However, in early 2024, a male rhino named Samson was found dead from a snare. This caused the Javan rhino population to decrease to 81 individuals.

Even though the population is still very small, efforts to conserve the Javan Rhinoceros continue to be made by various parties, including TNUK, the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK), and non-government organizations.

These efforts include expanding rhino habitat, increasing patrols to prevent poaching, and developing a rhino breeding program in captivity.

With continued conservation efforts, it is hoped that the Javan Rhinoceros population can continue to increase in the future.

The Javan rhinoceros has the Latin name Rhinoceros sondaicus. The Javan rhino is known as one of two types of rhino whose habitat is only in Indonesia.

The Javan rhino is also one of five rhino species remaining in the world. Based on the IUCN Red List Data Book, this animal has Critically Endangered status due to its narrow population distribution, small population size, and level of risk to its habitat and population.

One of the distinctive characteristics of the Javan rhinoceros is that it only has one horn and is relatively small in size.

This small size differentiates it from the Javan Rhino’s horn.

The Javan rhinoceros weighs between 900 and 2,300 kilograms. While the body length ranges from 2 to 4 meters.

The Javan rhinoceros has a tapered upper lip. This helps him to take leaves or twigs as food.
