MEXICO CITY (apro).- The Federal Labor Law (LFT), in its article 74, establishes which days of mandatory rest are for workers in Mexico.

Officially, May 1 is Labor Day, so the day is a mandatory rest day, so workers should not go to their jobs, unless they agree with their employer, in which case, workers have the right to receive – on a mandatory basis – a double salary that day, in addition to the salary that corresponds to them for their work.

In many countries, May 1 of each year is commemorated as Labor Day, in memory of a general strike of workers who demanded the reduction of the working day to eight hours. The protest began on May 1, 1886, in Chicago, United States, and for which they were violently repressed.

In Mexico, the first workers’ parade was held on May 1, 1913, organized by the Casa del Obrero Mundial, which unified several worker organizations. Subsequently, its members decided to publicly commemorate May 1 as International Labor Day.

May 5, the day of the Battle of Puebla, is not considered a mandatory day of rest.

According to the LFT, the mandatory rest days for the rest of the year 2024 are:

  • May 1
  • 16 of September
  • Third Monday of November, in commemoration of November 20
  • December 1st transition of the Federal Executive Branch (every 6 years)
  • December 25th
  • That determined by the federal and local electoral laws, in the case of ordinary elections, to carry out the election day.
