How could Democrats replace Biden in the presidential race?

MEXICO CITY (apro).- According to analysts, it is unlikely that Joe Biden will withdraw as the Democratic Party’s candidate for president in the elections next November, but if that were to happen, the nomination of another candidate would be a complicated and uncertain process.

In the scenario that Biden decides to stay in the race, it is unlikely that there will be a different candidate on the ticket, but someone could try to replace him in an open nomination process at the Democratic National Convention (DNC), which will take place this August. The other scenario is that the still-president decides to leave the race voluntarily.

Biden won the votes of nearly all 3,900 Democratic delegates nationwide in the primaries. If he were to withdraw, those same delegates would decide who to vote for. Zolan Kanno-Youngs, White House correspondent for the New York Times, told CNN that Biden cannot simply withdraw and ask the delegates who voted for him to now vote for another candidate.

Backroom deals and lobbying could prevail in the race for the nomination as potential candidates try to convince delegates to support them, CNN explained.

In addition, “a potential candidate would have to obtain the votes of about 2,000 delegates,” Elaine Karmack, a member of the DNC’s Rules and Bylaws Committee, explained to the same media outlet.

If none of the candidates manages to obtain the necessary number of votes in the first round, the so-called “superdelegates” would have to be used. They are made up of people from the party; Democrats who are in elected office can also participate in the vote.

But if the nomination process reaches this stage, the hypothetical presidential candidate would have a late start in the race for the presidency, which could affect him, especially in the monetary sphere, since he would have to get his own money, unless it is the current vice president, Kamala Harris.

Harris could use Biden’s campaign money, as her name appears on the paperwork alongside the president’s, CNN reported. The latest scenario is that Biden drops out of the race after the convention, if that happens the DNC would have to consult with Democratic leaders in Congress and governors of that party, before selecting the candidate on its own.
