In one year, intentional homicides in Chiapas increased 33% and returned to the levels recorded at the beginning of the government of Morenista Rutilio Escandón.

Data from Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System (SESNSP) indicate that in 2018, the first year of Escandón’s mandate, 562 murders were recorded, a figure that fell slightly in 2019 (525) and in 2020, the first year of the covid-19 pandemic, it was reduced to 419. However, after a year Next it rose again (429).

In 2022, official data records 377 intentional homicides, a figure that increased more than 30% to 500 of these crimes the following year.

As of February of this year alone, the state has had 97 murders.

The violent wave has worsened in recent days with the clashes in La Concordia.

Despite this, there was still no uniformed presence yesterday and the construction work on the cable-stayed bridge is momentarily suspended by the Escandón government.

FEAR

Dora Lilia Roblero, director of the Fray Bartolomé de Las Casas Human Rights Center, lamented the authorities’ disdain for the murders in La Concordia.

He stated that the lack of information about the violent events is explained because those who dare to file complaints are not accepted by the Chiapas Prosecutor’s Office.

There are people who have gone to Frayba’s office who tell us that they have tried to file a complaint, but unfortunately they do not receive the complaints.”

Although the events occurred last Sunday, the government of Rutilio Escandón Cadenas gave official information about the bloody clashes until yesterday.

SHOOTINGS CONFIRM IN LA CONCORDIA

Last Sunday, two clashes occurred in the municipality of La Concordia, Chiapas, one between groups of armed civilians and another against elements of the National Guard, both with a balance of 10 people dead, 13 detainees of Guatemalan origin and weapons seized.

In response to the indication of the president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC) published an information card with details of both events.

The agency indicated that, in relation to the first, a confrontation between groups of armed civilians occurred early Sunday morning at a home in the Nuevo Paraíso ejido, in that Chiapas municipality.

Elements of the Mexican Army, the National Guard and the State Police went to that point, who confirmed the discovery of five lifeless male bodies, as well as six motorcycles and 15 burned vehicles.

The second confrontation occurred in the area known as Chalán de Zaragoza, also in La Concordia, where an armed group committed an attack against National Guard personnel.

The result of the attack was five alleged perpetrators dead.
