West Indies, the joint host of the upcoming T20 World Cup, has announced the team. The 15-man squad includes Shimron Hetmyer and 24-year-old budding star Shamar Joseph.

Unfortunately, Hetmyer did not play in the 2022 T20 World Cup. He was unanimously dropped from the team as he could not catch the flight to Australia. This batter is waiting to storm the home field.

Shamar’s inclusion is surprising. The fast bowler, who took 13 wickets in the two-match series on his Test debut against Australia, has played just three T20Is but has yet to make his international debut in the format.

The team led by Rovman Powell will be on a mission to reclaim the title. Aljari Joseph became his deputy. Nicolas Pooran, Andre Russell and Jason Holder made the squad.

Sunil Narine’s much-talked-about performance in the IPL did not work to get him to retire. Head coach Darren Sammy said he was planned to be included in the squad.

The former World Cup-winning captain also said that Cricket West Indies has requested the BCCI to release the players from the IPL as soon as possible.

West Indies will play against Papua New Guinea, Uganda, New Zealand and Afghanistan in Group ‘C’. New Guinea is their first opponent on June 2. The next match is against Uganda on June 8. The Caribbean will play New Zealand on June 12 and Afghanistan on June 17.

West Indies Squad: Rovman Powell (captain), Alzari Joseph (vice-captain), Johnson Charles, Roston Chase, Shimron Hetmyer, Shamar Joseph, Brandon King, Nicholas Pooran, Shai Hope, Andre Russell, Romario Shepherd, Jason Holder, Akil Hossain, Gudakesh Moti, Sherfane Rutherford.
