Summer maneuvers! Before today’s football match between Sparta and Baník Ostrava, the police secured several people at the Letná stadium. The reason was a conflict in which fans of the visiting team tried to attack supporters of the home club.
Already when escorting Baník fans from the station to the stadium, the police restricted the personal freedom of one person. The reason was failure to obey the summons.
However, the whole situation escalated in front of the stadium when the visiting fans tried to attack the home fans. “Policemen from the special order unit, together with policemen on horseback, prevented the conflict and secured several persons on the spot,” the police said.
Later, the police specified that they arrested a total of eight Baník fans. “Seven fans were detained for disobeying the summons and one fan was detained because he has a warrant for detention,” they specified. Another Sparta fan ended up in the hands of the police on Letenské náměstí.
Sparta, which is defending the league title, has a two-point lead over Slavia, which will host seventh-ranked Olomouc on Sunday. If they win and their rival loses at the same time, Letenští can take control of the first half ahead of time.
A week ago, Sparta defeated Bohemians 3:1 in the Prague derby, and thanks to the defeat of Slavia 0:1 in Pilsen, they returned to the top of the competition after one round. The reigning champions have not lost at home in this league season and have beaten Ostrava at Letná in nine of the last ten matches of the top flight. They recorded their only loss in the last one in a 1:1 draw.
