When enough is enough. Despite many warnings, Hein Vanhaezebrouck has seen the core of him silently empty in recent weeks and months. After the cup elimination, the Gent coach once again confronted his management with the facts. “I said from the beginning that we had to arm ourselves, but the situation has only gotten worse,” the text reads.
Things are going from bad to worse for the core group of KAA Gent.
Hein Vanhaezebrouck has insisted for a season and a half that his core is too small to compete for prizes, but even this winter break has made little difference.
On the contrary: the Gent coach has seen his golden boy Malick Fofana leave definitively, has had to say goodbye to several strong players who went to the Asian and African Cups and still has to deal with a packed basket.
My players did not choose to play football in this situation.

Furthermore, yesterday there was an injury to goalkeeper Davy Roef and a painful cup exit against rival Club Brugge, where he was forced to play with two youngsters in defence.
“I can only be proud of the players who were on the pitch, young or old”, he first protected his team after the match.
“They didn’t choose and didn’t come here to play football in this situation,” he continued of his team’s selection problems.
“My core simply cannot help the fact that it is too small. But my men see a potential cup final or victory overlooked. They are simply victims of these circumstances.”
Roef had to leave after 20 minutes.
The Gent manager once again points to the board of directors who, according to him, must act urgently to strengthen the core for the rest of the season.
“As a club we need to be armed against these circumstances. I already said this at the beginning of the season, actually. But the situation has only gotten worse. Other clubs have also seen players leave for the African or Asian Cup, but they believe: this won’t bother them much.”
“Is this a reproach to the board of directors? No, it’s reality. However, we hope to recover soon so as not to get into trouble and lose our place in the competition.”
Louwagie promises
As if Ghent coach Michel Louwagie had already sensed the mood, he made promises of new signings yesterday, even before his coach’s plea.
“Our intention is to come out of this transfer period stronger,” Louwagie said at half-time. “We will definitely take another defender, maybe even two. I hope for a breakthrough in the next few days.”
And what will happen after the departure of Malick Fofana and perhaps Gift Orban? “There is also the possibility that we will opt for a striker,” the coach said. “And for the rest we won’t miss any opportunity.”
Louwagie, however, also wants to express a positive comment on the situation outlined by his coach. “After all, we sold well, didn’t we? If you see on Transfermarkt (the site) that Fofana’s value is estimated at 8 million and we sold him for 22 million + 20% on the added value on resale, then you feel good. “
And now we look on Transfermarkt for that new growing talent?
