Legendary Dutch footballer Marco van Basten criticized the penalty UEFA gave to our national footballer Merih Demiral. Van Basten, who argued that Turkey should make the decision regarding Merih, said, “Who is UEFA to say ‘You can’t do this’? Now you are allowing politics to come into play again and deciding to suspend a player.”
“WHO IS UEFA!”
Speaking to Dutch media outlet NOS, Van Basten said: “Shouldn’t the Turks be the ones to impose the penalty if they feel this behaviour is wrong? Who is UEFA to say ‘You can’t do this’? Now you’re letting politics get in the way again and deciding to suspend a player. And then you say ‘They’re playing politics’, right? This is really strange. Stick to football!”
WHAT HAPPENED?
UEFA had given Merih Demiral a 2-match ban due to his Grey Wolf salute after scoring goals in the Austria match. In addition to the 2-match ban, UEFA also requested that Merih Demiral remove his social media posts, and explained the reasoning behind the ban by saying, “The Turkish Football Federation has decided to ban player Merih Demiral from a total of two (2) UEFA national team matches in which he could participate, on the grounds that he did not comply with the general principles of conduct, violated basic rules of courtesy, used sports events for non-sporting demonstrations and damaged the reputation of the sport of football.”
