When we hear the name ‘Hawaii Mithai’, childhood memories flash in our eyes. Any place that is regularly crowded can be seen selling attractive pink sweets, which are very popular with children. However, this food has been officially banned in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.

The state government has decided that there is a risk of cancer in this food made of sugar. After such a decision of Tamil Nadu, the neighboring state of Andhra Pradesh and the Union State of Delhi are also shaken.

In a report on Thursday (February 22), the British media BBC reported that last week in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, various samples of Hawaiian sweets were tested and found cancer elements. After that, the state government banned the sale of Hawaiian sweets there.

Tamil Nadu’s Chennai City Food Safety Officer P Satish Kumar told the Indian newspaper Indian Express that the chemicals in Hawaiian sweets can cause cancer and damage various organs. Hawaiian Sweets in India are made by various vendors on their own initiative. None of them have authorized factories to manufacture this food.

He said his team conducted a raid against Hawaiian sweet sellers on a beach in the city last week. Lab tests on samples collected from vendors show that the chemical compound rhodamine-B is used to dye Hawaiian sweets pink. This chemical compound is commonly used as a colorant for clothes, cosmetics and ink.

Tamil Nadu Health Minister MA Subramanian said packaging, exporting, selling, or supplying food containing Rhodamine-B at weddings or other events would be a punishable offense under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
