The 2024 North America 50 Best Bars list, sponsored by Perrier, was revealed at a live awards ceremony at Rosewood San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. Covering 21 destinations from Canada to the Caribbean, explore this year’s ranking and start planning your next drinks adventure.
While Handshake Speakeasy’s precise location may be secret (hidden behind an innocuous black door marked with a silver number 13 in the Colonia Juárez neighborhood of Mexico City), the bar’s reputation is well known. This art deco cocktail sanctuary has been at the forefront of the innovative Mexican drinks scene since its opening in 2021.
In three years, under the strict guidance of bar director Eric Van Beek, it has received enormous acclaim, ranking #3 on The World’s 50 Best Bars 2023 and reaching #2 in the 2022 and 2023 North American editions. 50 best bars. This year, after this remarkable journey, it has achieved first place in the region.
Handshake Speakeasy, in Mexico City, was crowned No.1 as The Best Bar in North America and The Best Bar in Mexico, sponsored by Perrier. El SuperBueno, from New York City, is in the No. 2 position in the ranking and wins the title Disaronno Highest New Entry, as well as The Best Bar in Northeast USA 2024, sponsored by Disaronno. New York City’s Overstory follows at No.3.
Civil Liberties, from Toronto, at No.21, wins for the third consecutive year the title of The Best Bar in Canada, sponsored by Naked Malt along with La Factoría, from Puerto Rico at No.18, recognized as The Best Bar in the Caribbean, sponsored by Amaro Lucano also for the third year. Overall, the US leads the list with 26 bars, followed by Mexico with 15 bars, Canada with seven and the Caribbean with two.
Also based in Mexico City: Café de Nadie is at No. 17, Baltra at No. 26, and the all-female Japanese izakaya Kaito del Valle at No. 28. List regular Hanky Panky takes 42nd place, and Bruges completes the representation of the city in 45th place.
